Archival history
The album was discovered by Fr Fergus O'Donoghue SJ, Province Archivist, in the basement of the Jesuit house at Gardiner Street, Dublin. It was found with the names of each of the sitters inserted in pencil over the images. Only one portrait (PC/4/2) is unidentified. A portrait of Fr William Hayden SJ is missing between PC/4/44 and PC/4/45.

Scope and content
While various studios, both in Ireland and elsewhere, were responsible for the images, the most frequent photographer was A. Lesage, ‘Photographer to the Catholic Hierarchy’, 40 Lower Sackville Street, Dublin. As well as studio portraits, the album contains a number of deathbed scenes and mass cards (PC/4/ 8, 10, 12). Two more informal photographs from Sydney were adhered to the albums front flyleaf and back cover (PC/4/1, PC/4/52).
This collection derives from an album of portraits of members of the Society of Jesus in the period 1853-1910.

All items retained permanently.
System of arrangement
For the purposes of preservation, most of the portraits have been removed from the album. The exception to this are those at the beginning and at the end which were adhered to the fly-leaves and inside back cover (PC/4/1, PC/4/50, PC/4/51, PC/4/52). The photographs are listed here in the order in which they appeared in the album.
